To Floss or Not to Floss..

Lately, there has been a lot of talk about flossing and if it is good or not! Kind of reminds me of coffee, some studies say is good for you and others say it isn't.

Our dental office believes that flossing is beneficial to a person's general oral health. Our staff is trained to address the issues of proper flossing to our patients on an individual need basis. We promote many different tools used to effectively and safely clean between the teeth.

If you are concerned with the recent news reports, please give our office a call to schedule an appointment. We will be happy to review your concerns and make sure you are properly caring for your teeth.

Oral Care During the Holidays: Sugar-Free Countdown to Christmas

Below is an excerpt from an article found on Colgate.com that was written by Sher Warkentin

Maintaining good oral care during the holidays can be tough with the bombardment of sugary sweets all season. Counting down to Christmas with an advent calendar is a fun activity for your kids, but if they are filled with chocolate and sweets, it won't be so great for their teeth. Check out these simple sugar-free ideas to fill your countdown instead.

Holiday Activity Fun
Fill your child's countdown with special moments that they will cherish all year round. For each day of the month come up with a fun holiday activity that you can do together as a family. Some ideas include: watching a holiday movie, going ice skating, building a snowman and looking at Christmas lights. Write down the activity on a slip of paper and tuck one note into each day of your advent calendar.

A Puzzling Treat
Give your child a fun challenge with a customized puzzle. Draw a picture or write a special message on a blank puzzle. Break the pieces apart and place one puzzle piece in each day of your advent calendar. Every day your child can add the pieces together until they have a completed puzzle revealing a special holiday message or fun activity to do together.

3 Things All Athletes Should Do for Their Teeth

Below is an excerpt from an article found on MouthHealthy.org

Dentist Dr. Thomas Long has seen firsthand what can happen when “the puck stops here.” In addition to seeing everyday athletes in his private practice, Dr. Long (a former college hockey player himself) is the team dentist for the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes.

No matter what sport or skill level, Dr. Long says athletes need to take care of their teeth both on and off the field. “Most athletes are careful about what they eat and their workout routine. Part of that routine should include taking care of your mouth and teeth every single day,” he says. "It would be a shame to miss practice or a game because you are in the dentist's office receiving treatment or recovering from a dental surgical procedure.”

Here, Dr. Long shares his playbook for a healthy mouth.

  • Make a Mouthguard Part of Your Uniform
  • Sideline Sugary Sports Drinks
  • Brush, Floss, Rinse, Repeat

To read the entire article, including more detailed information on the three steps listed in Dr. Long's playbook for a health mouth, please visit MouthHealthy.org.

Dental Care for Seniors

Focusing on the Needs of Our Seniors

Different age groups have specific problems that we watch for. With seniors, we carefully check fillings to see that they are not loose or that decay has set in under or around them. We look for any fractures or chips in teeth to also repair before decay sets in. Seniors may be taking medications that create a dry mouth, and we can remedy the problem with basic products we provide. Teeth may no longer look attractive due to staining and discoloration from tobacco and caffeine consumption. We can whiten and brighten teeth to their original luster again.
The most serious and often common problem with seniors is gum disease or root decay. If ever you experience bleeding gums or loose teeth, please contact us immediately. We continue to emphasize the importance of proper cleaning of teeth and gums every day, and consuming more nutritious meals and snacks.

Dental TMJ and TMD Relief

Proper Bite Alignment to Relieve Jaw Pain and Headaches

If you have been suffering from TMJ or TMD for quite some time, you are probably aware the common reason for this problem is called a malocclusion, which is an improper bite. When the upper and lower dental arches do not come together as nature intended, pain in the head, neck, shoulder, and jaws is the result. Often teeth may be ground down, which also interferes with the jaw resting as it should.
Don't suffer any longer with this disability. We can restore your bite to its proper position and alleviate the pain to which you may have become accustomed. Without this pain, you will experience a new quality of life that will make you want to smile!

Children's Dentistry

Your Child's Dentist is Important for Good Health

We stress the importance of children learning how to care for their teeth at an early age. We do so in an environment that is comfortable and fun for them and make sure they understand that caring for their teeth is important for good health.
Children are more prone to cavities for various reasons. Once decay has set in to a tooth, it is permanent damage that requires a filling. Until a child is able to make proper brushing and flossing a daily habit, we ask parents to supervise them with their dental routine.
Children eat throughout the day, and every time food and drink are consumed, acid is produced in the mouth. Teeth that are not clean cause continued acid production and bacteria build-up, and this will lead to decay. We recommend continued daily dental hygiene, more nutritious food choices, and one application of a mineralizing varnish to the surfaces of teeth to reduce the chances of decay.

Dental Gum Disease Treatments

A Different Approach to Reversing Gum Disease

It is possible to avoid gum surgery and other health problems by having gum infection treated when the problem first starts. Nonsurgical methods are easier than having surgery, which may be your only option if the infection is severe. Together with better daily dental care at home, nonsurgical methods will halt the problem. Both methods are usually provided for by dental insurance plans.

Dental Gum Disease

Losing Teeth Because of Gum Disease

Gum disease, not decay, is the most frequent reason for missing teeth. Signs of infected gums are loose teeth and bleeding gums while flossing or brushing. Sometimes there are no significant signs until the problem is severely advanced. When treatment begins in the earlier stages, this problem can be halted by nonsurgical means. If you wait too long, surgery may be the only option.

Serious Consequences of Gum Disease
A link between gum disease and life-threatening conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and stroke has been identified. Medical research has confirmed that the bacteria infecting gums travel in the bloodstream, affecting vital organs and adding to or playing a role in the development of these serious conditions.
The American Dental Association has provided statistics that state 8 out of 10 people in the United States have this gum problem at some level. Dentists are now more concerned about periodontal (gum) disease, as it can mean more than losing your teeth.
The American Academy of Periodontology reports: "studies found periodontal infection may contribute to the development of heart disease, increase the risk of premature, underweight births, and pose a serious threat to people whose health is already compromised due to diabetes and respiratory diseases."

Dental Sealants

Dental Sealants Make Healthy Teeth Easier

Even meticulous brushing can miss hard-to-reach areas in the back of the mouth. As plaque begins to form, decay will follow. Fortunately, there is a preventive treatment that can help keep this from happening. One application of a dental sealant is quick, easy, and very effective in the fight against decay.
This is the whole procedure: Once the teeth have been cleaned and sterilized, Dr. Gentry applies a thin coating of the sealant to the biting surfaces of the back teeth. It is clear or white and therefore invisible. With a curing light, the coating is bonded to the surface of the teeth. And that is the entire procedure that takes just minutes!
It has been proven to be very effective for both adolescents and children in the fight against decay and helping them to keep their natural teeth for a lifetime.

Dental Digital X-rays

Less Radiation and No Waiting Time

Digital technology provides an immediate X-ray that eliminates the waiting time of the traditional X-ray method by simply inserting a digital sensor in your mouth that sends the images directly to our computer. We also have the ability to take a panoramic image of your teeth and jaw structures in one shot. Digital means 75% less radiation exposure, and as no images need to be developed, there are no chemicals used that are harmful to the environment.

Diabetes and Your Mouth # 1 : 4 Signs You May Have a Problem

Diabetes puts you at risk for dental problems. It impairs the ability to fight bacteria in your mouth. Having high blood sugar encourages bacteria to grow and contributes to gum disease. You may have gum disease if you have:

  • Gums that are red, sore, bleeding, or swollen, or that pull away from your teeth
  • Loose teeth
  • Chronic bad breath
  • An irregular bite or dentures that don't fit well
